Hey Everyone,

I just took a spill at a stop sign where there was a oil streak that got the best of me. Before I knew it, I was on the ground as the rear tire swayed 90 degrees to the right in no time. Luckily all I got was a sprained ankle from the bike resting on me but my bike did get a little damage. I ride a 2014 standard base model and it still runs fine, just seems to be cosmetic damage on the crankcase cover, handlebar weight, and the speedometer meter cover.

My question to you all is that I'm having trouble locating exactly which replacement parts I should be getting. My issue is that aside from the speedometer cover, there are multiple white plastic pieces that are broken near some circuit boards (although no visible damage to the electronics) and I'm hoping that I can replace this without having to buy the whole meter assembly ($680). I've been looking at hondapartshouse.com and other similar sites with the blow up sections of the meter but I can't tell if the "COVER,MAIN" and the "COVER,SPEEDOMETER" would actually take care of this internal problem. Can anyone verify if I'll be alright to get these two parts to replace? I'll attach some photos for reference.

Can't say for sure, but it appears that you need both
the main cover 37101-MGC-N41 ($86.95) and
the speedo cover 371-2-MGC-N41 ($23.95)

Strange the parts that can be damaged from a simple spill.
I dropped my XT250 the first week I had it, climbing Joe May Canyon from Alamo Road in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge.
Scratched the top of the front fender, scratched the small cowling on the top of the headlight, scratched the back of one mirrors and rotated the clutch perch.

Sorry about your ankle. Hope it and your bike recover soon.

Thank you SportsterDoc, Ben70, and Cormanus for the quick reply! I'm buying the replacement covers now and will update if there are any surprises that pop up. Regarding the damage on the crankcase, I was looking into Cormanus' recommended thread of repair and it seems like most people are saying to sand down rather than trying to fill in any lost material. I'll look into this more and if I take this on, I'll be sure to post pictures. I feel that I am in good hands and really appreciate the extra effort and information given!

Sorry to hear about your mishap Fenderbot. I had a similar one about 30 years ago (and also ended up with a sprained ankle and a bit of road rash). Ever since then I've approached intersections on either the left or right side of the lane. Never in the middle.

I'm about to do the same repair on my '13, thanks to a deer impact a few summers back. I had similar damage to the outer cover and internal white plastic piece. Lucky for you the '14s have a different (and cheaper) gauge set up. My parts were about $50 more than yours.

I'll probably be doing mine in the next few weeks, after I finish a few repairs to my backup bike.

I had similar damage to my gauges a while back. The bike was repaired by Honda through insurance and yes they replaced the individual parts and retained the same gauges. The back cover and white supporting bracket can be ordered individually. Another shop wanted to replace the whole gauge cluster at some astronomical price.

How bad is the crankcase? Do you have a pic?

My biggest worry is hitting something in a turn that instantly reduces friction causing me to crash.

Intersections are notorious for sand but oil is also a dangerous hazard.

Even on the "Dragon" and other blind curves, I'm more worried about grass clippings, sand, oil etc than I am about my ability or the ability of on coming traffic to be in their lane.

I even think about someone throwing out a cup of drink....doesn't take much to reduce the coefficient of friction to zero.

But I guess this "fear" comes back to the only time I've ever been down.... on my 1973 CB 350, 45 years ago at an intersection on sand. Like you said, down in an instant, zero time to react.
