I just want to post a little info for anyone who may be as naïve as I was.
Just over a year ago I bought a new 2104 from a dealer at a good price. I didn't know it at the time but I was developing a condition called Shingles. As a consequence I haven't been able to ride my CB in over a year.
If you've ever had chicken pox it leaves behind a virus that can and will lie dormant for decades. I developed it over a year ago and am still dealing with it. Shingles has no cure and no treatment other than pain killers. The condition affects balance which is why I can't ride the CB right now. It is in covered storage until such time as the Shingles
dissipates and I can finally enjoy riding again.
Wish I know then what I know now. If you have had chicken pox in the past there is now a vaccination you can get which will prevent Shingles from manifesting. So if you've had chicken pox... get the vaccination. Believe me you don't want to live with the constant agony
of this virus. I am 61 and nobody knows how long I'll have to live with
this.
Just thought I'd let you know. NOBODY should have to live with this.
I'll see you on the road when I can![/size]
Sorry for your troubles.
You are rather young for shingles.
Seven years ago, at age 63, my doctor recommended the inoculation...glad I agreed, as I had Chicken Pox in elementary school (after both types of measles)

Optimism my friend, I recovered so completely that I practically forgot about the episode of a couple of years back, until I read your post.

(Man, this is an old fart's motorcycle forum Smile

ROFL You're right about that. Had kidney stones in my bladder blasted this morning. Should be good for another 5 years.
Sorry to hear about that, Zippo. I had shingles right after getting chicken pox at age 3. Although it's been 53 years, I still vividly remember how miserable it was.

I had a couple of more mild cases about 10 yrs. ago when I was taking a medication that suppresses the immune system. Immuno-suppressent medications used to treat things like arthritis or psoriasis can depress your immune system just enough to allow the virus to become painfully active again. Anyone taking such medications should seriously consider the vaccine. This is not something you want to endure if you can avoid it. The virus attacks the nerves under your skin and the pain is constant and excrutiating.

Hope you get back to normal and back on your CB soon!
hate to hear you going through this and wish you the best.

For the Military Vets on here VA will give you the vaccination for free if Service connected and perhaps even if you are not.
I feel your pain....I had a mild case of shingles when I went to test ride my 2014....it was so obvious they wouldn't loan me a helmet so I bought a new helmet just for a test ride.

I thought I had another episode starting recently and my doctor and my wife (RN) told me there was a new improved vaccine coming out in January.

Both suggested I wait to get the new vaccine that is like 97% effected vs the old one that is like 70%.

I'll be getting mine in January!
So sorry you are experiencing this zippo. Seen the commercials and it doesn't look like fun. I've had such a bad year medically anyway (kidney stone, gout 2x, and diagnosed with microscopic colitis) it only makes sense that this issue would be next to hit me lol.

Glad you posted that offroad. I was touched by this thread to the extent I was going to call the Dr today and make an appt for myself and my wife. We are both in the age group but I have no idea if I had chicken pox or not, and both my parents are deceased so no one to ask. Better safe than sorry I guess. If a more effective vaccine is coming out in Jan, I can wait a month.
zippooriginal, sorry to hear of your troubles, and wish you a symptom free future sooner rather than later.

I'm starting to feel like an old geezer...maybe it's the bike! If I buy a crotch rocket, will my medical conditions go away?
I feel younger when I am riding the CB. Sort of like a time machine/magic carpet. I fear a crotch rocket might make my medical conditions go away permanently. Along with all my other conditions. Angel
