Hi everyone,
I’m trying to adjust the position of the gear shift lever by turning the linkage rod (shown in the picture below). By loosening the nuts on both ends and rotating the rod, the lever angle can be adjusted.
The problem is that the nut on the left side is stuck. When I try to loosen it, the entire linkage rod twists, and I’m worried about breaking it. I’ve tried holding the rod with pliers, but I can’t get a good enough grip to keep it steady while applying force to the nut. The nut on the right side is loose, so I can’t use it for leverage either — it just unscrews when I apply any force.

You'll need two 10mm open-end wrenches. Lock the rear nut by tightening it and keep it under pressure with the wrench. The forward nut is a left hand thread. Put another wrench on it and turn the opposite direction to loosen it.
So, if both wrenches are accessed from the top, the rear is pull towards you, the front pushed inward.
Oh God, thank you so much! I just wasn’t getting the whole normal and reverse thread thing, I couldn’t wrap my head around which way to turn each nut. Turns out I’d been turning the left one the wrong way the whole time. I feel so dumb now. I spent the last couple of days stuck on this, should’ve come here sooner!
Somtimes, the best way to learn is from our own mistakes while practicing..
I am going to Portugal in mid May 2026 for about 10 days. Lisbon, Sesimbra, Cascais, Sintra, but not so sure yet where I will stay... need some free tutoring?

Happy I could help. There are so few instances of left hand threads used anywhere, so don't beat yourself up for that.
