Is there a reason why this new forum (and the earlier one) does not have a "First Unread Post" button? It's always been annoying that I must scroll down through all the posts that I've already seen just to get to the latest one.

It is the default setting for MyBB. We can reverse it with a custom plugin if Members prefer to read the latest post. However, that would force people to scroll down to the read the first post of a long thread and then scroll up to read the entire thread. What do you think is best?

Wouldn't clicking on the "Last Post" accomplish this?
on the right hand side of the screen when you log on should be a box that says recent posts. If you see a thread that interests you, clicking on that will take you to the last post in that thread, but like was said, then you'd have to scroll UP to read previous posts
you can also click on View New posts and View Today's posts to see current postings

cookiemech is looking for something different. He wants a link to take you to the first new-to-you post in any thread. For example: if, since I last logged on, there'd been enthusiastic discussion on a tread, there would be a link to take me to the first post I'd not read rather than to the end leaving me to stroll back.
If the forum software doesn't support it, let us live with it. You've done more than enough.
I'd also not support reversing the order of posts.
