The stupidity of what goes on behind the wheel is almost beyond words.
Only 4 years for texting while driving and killing other person = it's a big joke.
Wonder if the judge gave her maximum allowed by the local law or less than that???
The Courts in the USA are far too easy on texting while driving , heavy fines , banning from driving for at least a year and triple their insurance.
I have to say that the last few years my pleasure of riding my bikes is a lot less because of distracted driving , especially texting.
When you stop at a light nearly everyone gets on their phone : to check WHAT ? Just wait till weed is legal and we will see even more problems on the road.
We already have cannabis legal in Ontario, and sikhs can ride their bikes without helmets in Ontario and BC as long as they wear their holy turbans.
Stupidity has no limits.....drugs + alcohol + weed + no helmets + texting while operating a vehicle = absolutely no chance to survive for the third party. Period.
What people have brains for ?????/

This reminds me of an aspect of South Carolina law that I actually like. SC is really bad on road safety, but if they do revoke/suspend your license, you're still allowed to ride a moped. That's why they're sometimes referred to as "liquorcycles." The reason I like this is that it takes the drivers who are the worst offenders, and puts them in a position to be in maximum personal danger while driving a vehicle that is very unlikley to cause harm to anybody else but themselves. basically, if you're a bad driver and you have to spend a couple of years on a moped, you'll either die or learn something. it's a pretty good system if you ask me!

peterB, I suspect, when you think about what it might be like, 4 years in prison is a long time, particularly when you'll have to live with having killed your friend for ever.
no doubt it is a huge problem that needs to be dealt with. But I fear it's like smoking No matter how many times they tell us how dangerous it is, how addictive it is, how many ads they play on TV showing ex smokers with half their necks/faces gone.., young people still take it up every day and will continue to do so, figuring they know plenty of people who smoke who that doesn't happen to. Same with drinking and driving. Same with taking drugs and driving. Same with texting and driving. Same with riding without a helmet.
Who doesn't know those things are dangerous?
I have a student, age 19 or 20, who told me she has already totalled her car and grandma's car (had to borrow it because of accident #1)...for both accidents she said she was texting at the time. Apparently, no consequences other than the vehicles themselves.
