I did not want to distract from the "Still Jonesing for a Standard" thread. So am starting fresh. However, on that thread you had stated:
Out of curiosity, whereabouts in Illinois might you be riding to?

Oh, hello, Guth...
My mom lives in Champaign, Illinois. She's 94 and still sharp. 4 years ago I rode my '14 Standard from OR to Illinois over 3 weeks: 1 week there, 1 week stay and 1 week making my way back visiting family in Missouri, Kansas and Colorado. I'd love to do this trip again, but choose a slight different route out and back.
My daughter may be doing research in NJ or NY this summer and so I thought maybe this is the time to ride across the country. Been wanting to for a long time, but honestly, not sure if I'm up for it. Well, I think I'd ride there ok, but it sure is a long way back home!

I've often thought of flying in someplace, renting a bike for one-way, ride it to the destination, then fly home. Here on the West Coast, Hwy 1 is full of Germans, Swedes, Danes, all the Northern Euros, renting bikes and Mustang convertibles, driving south from the Bay Area to LA, dropping the bike off and flying out of LAX. You see auto hauler trucks full of bikes and cars heading north to take them back to the Bay Area.
CB: Sounds like a great business for auto haulers.

Small world. The last time I ever saw my grandmother (my mom’s Mom) we ended up dining in Champaign. I was actually born in the neighboring town of Urbana.
I found out today that Hertz is renting bikes. I might have to rethink my idea of buying an adventure bike.
Guth you’d better go on pdedse’s ride home.
