I've heard of false neutrals, which I assume means you put the bike into neutral and then it slips back into first, but is there a name for the opposite -- where you can't get the bike into first from neutral without rocking the bike or letting out on the clutch and then putting it back in?
Its called normal operation. Due to the way the transmission works.
Poastoak is this obn a CB or on your FJR?. Are you down shifting while you are moving..... or trying to downshift multiple times once you've stopped?
Are you seeing a dash --- in the instruments? (if it's on the CB?)
There are really no false neutrals btw, only shifting errors.
I always thought a false neutral was when you are rowing through gears (up typically) and went in to neutral between gears on a shift. Happens to me occasionally on my Triumph. The Ferret is correct, mine usually occur due to a lazy foot.
I never had this problem on any of my three Hondas. It occurs with some frequency on my Yamaha, and I'm shifting exactly the same. If Honda made a sport tourer in the 650 pound range I'd be sorely tempted.
There is an adjustment on the shift linkage. 2 nuts and a rod. One of the nuts is left handed. Loosen the two nuts and twist the rod until the lever moves up 1/4" and then tighten the nuts.

Thanks, I never thought of an adjustment. I'll look into it. All different kinds of footwear -- no consistency there.
Occasionally I've had trouble going all the way down to 1 if I come to a stop without downshifting, then quickly try to click down to 1 after a stop. When it happens, I just release the clutch, squeeze again and it drops in. I try to downshift while still moving to avoid the problem.
