Funny name, eh? Plenty of life all over the valley, but those poor gold rush prospectors who perished enroute through those desert conditions simply weren't prepared. Glad you lived to share your pix!

In the small town of Shoshone just outside the park there's a prominent sign across the road from the Crowbar Cafe, which advertises the Death Valley Health Clinic. I've often wondered whether anyone gets cured there. The road, California State Route 127, is also called the "Lost Highway." It was featured in, and is the title of, a very strange film released in 1997.

interestingly, there was a feature about these flowers in Death Valley on the national news this morning. They showed the flowers and remarked that this was rare and the best crop of them in the last 11 or 13 years.

Well, thank you Mr. Ferret. It is truly worth a google news search to see all the stories being written about the flowers this year. I'll keep gathering photos for this forum since I've become addicted to my trips to the park.

The desert flowers are beautiful, but reminds me that I will be gardening soon instead of riding.....

Chapomis, I really enjoyed gardening when I lived in Wyoming. I had a large vegetable garden with a compost pile off to one side. In Las Vegas, the challenge is to keep your desert landscaping plants alive so the HOA doesn't send you a nastygram. I still may try some raised beds in the fall for salad type greens, herbs, etc.

I'm posting this in part to test another photo hosting site; however, I'm also planning for future wildflower updates. This is a variety known by the common names, gravel ghost, parachute plant, and tobacco weed. It is a member of the dandelion family.
