There are other Chat options, too. I am sure we will ultimately adopt the right Chat tool with help from all the members. This one is recommended by the MyBB Developers but lacks a Member to Member private chat function. Rather, it was built for commenting more on posts. Please share your thoughts any way you prefer. Plugins can be turned on and off with a button whenever we reach consensus. David

I like that you are testing new forum functionality. The chat is an interesting feature, though I am trying to figure out how it would be used. Does it have a limit on how long or how many messages are kept? Is there a way to search chat history for useful information that gets posted there instead of forum threads? If there is an time expiration or count limit, I think I would rather see people post in threads so the history is there for others to see. In that respect it seems like it could be a bit redundant to posting in forum threads. I would hate to see users post useful knowledge in chat that could expire and be lost rather than archived in a relevant thread.
I won’t use it and don’t really care for it. BUT, just because I don’t doesn’t mean other won’t like it. So don’t go by just me
Cormanus told me how to minimize it.

I am not a big chatter, too, because I prefer detailed sharing over what text or chat can easily support. Be that as it may, I suspended disbelief to create this use case for the Development Road Map for the site. It is what I am hoping to validate.
Key Event Notification & Feedback (Forum Chat)
A key event can be documented in the CB1100 Forum Chat and be prominently displayed on the landing page. Authors can share reminders and key moments easily, drawing attention to the event. Members can respond, sharing their enthusiasm or expressing support for the event even if they cannot participate directly.
Personal Chat (Member(s) to Member(s))
Moderators may find it helpful to chat about a particular thread or Member in realtime vs sending private messages which have a less timely notification system. This statement assumes that Members would monitor "chats" more frequently than "messages." That is subject to validation.
Members may find it helpful to chat with other Members in near realtime about projects or decisions involving their CB1100s. Chat Groups can be defined by Members and be left in place for as long as the quick, direct chat posting remains relevant. The shelve life of a chat will be less than a Thread (forever) or a personal message (dependent upon the nature of the content). We can create custom codes that will identify if a Member is online or not. If not, the Chat will appear for the offline Member when he does login.
Administrators may find it helpful to send a Chat Notification to Forum Membership regarding maintenance tasks, feature enhancements, downtime, and other things which may impact a Member's experience while browsing the Forum. Assuming the Members review the Forum Chat on the landing page, a Member may be able to better schedule site visits or explore feature enhancements.
