For what it's worth, I've got a handlebar mounted Deflector DX on my CB11 and it was rock solid right up to 112 mph. The larger Plexi 3 on the CB750 has seen 110 mph. Not sure about other brands, but Nat. Cycle fairings mount solidly and are pretty stable aerodynamically. Cross-winds notwithstanding. But that's a problem with most types of fairings.
Cross winds are not much of an issue with frame mounted fairings as they can be with handlebar mounted ones. I've ran both on the same bike and prefer frame mounts (by a narrow margin and not for cross wind issues). My handlebar fairing was fairly large, not the bikini sized thing we find so popular today.
A laminar lip will help with getting air over your head. I used one on my Quota to get the bubble up above the chin piece. Quota's have a very poor air handling fairing; a shame as Moto Guzzi did have a dedicated windtunnel. But it was not used for the Q's fairing. All manner of devices were used to tame the air on that bike.
I really, really prefer a naked bike, especially in looks, but also in function. To me it is how motorcycles are supposed to look. I really dislike putting one on my bike, but sometimes function trumps form, and in cold weather on an extended trip, sometimes a shield really pays dividends.

Retail is $159 but they can be found online for about $ 140
In Minnesota it was a huge boon as it got damn cold at times. Clouds of bugs were nasty too, better for them to die on the windscreen than my chest.
In Arizona I prefer a smaller bikini fairing.
