EVERYONE on a mc forum likes to see pictures. I love pics especially of places I have not been to yet. Unfortunately most riders seldom seem to carry or use their cameras. Today it is really easy to carry and use your camera due to the excellent small lightweight point and shoot digitals on the market for under $75. They produce good quality pics and have plenty of manageable image capacity due to SD card storage. I don't go anywhere without mine, and haven't for many years. Like my helmet, gloves, jacket and boots, it is just a part of my riding attire whether I am going for an afternoon ride locally or on an extended trip like out west or to Europe.

The camera I have been using for the last 6 or 7 years is a small Fuji Finepix point and shoot which takes 8.2 megapixel pictures. I know the higher the megapixel the better the quality. That's as much as I know about megapixles lol. I wear this camera on a lanyard around my neck on the outside of my jacket where I can easily reach it. It is excellent for taking not only still pictures but 'on the fly' pictures as well. I simply hold the camera in my left hand, turn it on with my "up yours" finger and press the shutter with my index finger, Then turn it off again with my "up yours" finger, then let it drop on it's lanyard against my stomach.

editing features are on the back of the camera. The screen lets you preview the shot or see if you captured what you wanted

On a 1 week motorcycle vacation I will generally take over 500 photos, over 1000 on a 2 week trip. I bring home the memories. I take pics of bikes, people, scenery, food, hotels where I've stayed almost anything, and because my camera is always hanging in front of me it takes no extra time and I don't have to stop to take a pic unless I want to.

As I look at each picture it brings back a memory of a ride someplace .. locally, the next state, a destination ride, or a ride of a lifetime. I can't imagine not having these photos to look back at.

My advise....carry your camera...and use it!

LOL I used my " big" camera which I use for taking wildlife pics for the freelance writing I do for archery magazines

dpreview.com has several articles on buying digital cameras, sorted from the big guns (DSLR) then down the line from high end point and shoots to your daily point and shoots and weatherproof/waterproof cameras.

They do this around this time of year so folks can noodle out what to buy for gifts but they are the bees knees for us shooters because it can group similar cameras we're keen on buying but don't know which one to pull the trigger on.

Most are so good that we'd all be happy with their results, especially if you only show them online. But some with an interface you'll love and others you'll hate. Once you choose more or less what you want, the camera that is easier for YOU to use is the one to get. You'll take better pictures with it.

From time to time overstock web sites (e.g. woot.com) will have a p&S on sale for cheap. If you look at the reviews on something like Amazon.com you may find out why it is so cheap. But hey, a nice $75 camera won't bring you to tears if it meets an untimely end on a road trip like a higher end unit would.

Thanks for the post Ferret. I've a good little point and shoot Nikon Coolpix which I'll start practicing with. I need to be sure I can still do two things at once without winding up in a ditch!

Ferret... Great idea, the small camera and especially the lanyard. I've lately gotten used to using my iPhone, but with it 'stuck' in my pocket, it does take some effort to get it out. Thanks. I love the fact that your whole family rides... that's terrific!!

I use my iPhone for pictures, but I also use it for music and in any case, I wouldn't risk hanging it on a lanyard. It stays securely in my jacket pocket. What an elegantly simple solution you present here, Ferret. The only change I may try is to grab a zinger off my fly fishing vest and attach the camera to it. Now I just need to remember which drawer has my old digital camera.
