We have 90% florescent compacts, the daylight models only and the other 10% are led bulbs, more expensive but so much brighter. I can use a 402 watt equivalent led bulb where in the past I would need a 60 watt traditional or cfl bulb. I plan on switching over to led as much as I can and as funding permits. With the exception of like bedroom and living room as they will remain the daylight cfl bulbs.
Now those that take time to get bright I have found to be the cheaper models of cfl.

I bought an LED bulb that looked identical and the light output was nothing like the stock incandescent 1157. I didn't use it. Don't need to be rear-ended. Brighter is better.
Installed that SuperBright LED bulb in my Lucas-style tail light since the regular bulb was weak and the reflector surface isn't that good.
There is some info somewhere on the SuperBright site explaining why the red output light works better than the bright white. Sounds counter-intuitive but had to do with wavelengths and stuff.

The white LED lights look pink due to being so bright when seen through the tail light plastic. So they recommend red color.

As an example: a red lens will filter out all but the red portion of the light so if the light is all red, none or very little light will be blocked by the lens. The light from a White LED contains very little light in the red portion of the visible spectrum so most of the light would be filtered out by a red lens."
